Are Summer Skill Camps really Necessary That is certainly a loaded question.
Let’s start first with who is asking the question. Before you continue reading this article stop and ask your child one simple question. Ask him/her, “Are you a Soccer Player”?? If they say yes read on, if they say no stop right here.
Ball skills to a soccer player is like air to breath for the rest of us. We cannot live without it. Turning briefly to the far end of the soccer spectrum and looking at the success and failure of the U.S. National men’s team, those of us that follow soccer hear the same story. By the time these players get to the National level it is too late for them to compete on the International level, because they do not possess the needed skills to compete.
Now, I am not saying our skill camps are a ticket to the National team for each of your children. BUT what I am saying is that if you and your family are going to invest time, energy, and money into youth soccer and you want your child to have fun and learn, then your child must acquire the skills needed to play.
National statistics show that there is a huge decrease in the number of children playing after they turn 13 years old. When asked, if was not girls, or high school but it was that they were not having any fun any more. Which translates that they never learned the skills needed to master the game and those around them who have are playing at a level they cannot play at, and therefore the game is no longer fun.
The skills needed to play soccer are very hard to master. The American sports public mocks soccer for its low scores. Lets look at that for a moment. Huge goal, one goal keeper, so what’s the problem. Hitting a ball with ones foot with precision, speed, spin, and accuracy. That is something we all can do? Dribbling with pace, while not looking at the ball on your foot, while surveying the field, finding an open teammate and delivering the ball 30 yards across the field to your teammates foot. Something we all do every morning before work. I could go on and on, But you get the point.
Summer Skill Camps is the time when with no pressure of games, playing time, winning and losing, parent pressures, and school that players can relax, practice and learn. It is repetitious, can be boring, and seem like there is no purpose whatsoever. However it is the key to success and the key for your child to have fun playing no matter the outcome of the game. Skill training builds self confidence, self reliance, self worth. Skill training enables your child to be a part of a smoothly working team that measures success not only on the final score but on successful nuances of the game.
So the bottom line is if you want your child to have more fun playing soccer, create the opportunity for him/her to learn and be successful and enroll in summer skill camps. If you are tired of soccer, hate the tournaments, the travel and the commitment, relax and stay away from the ball all summer. It won’t be much longer before your child comes up to you and wants to quit, simply because the game is not fun anymore. Or was it because you choose not to give your child the tools to succeed.
The bottom line is Summer Skill Camps are a must for those kids that want to have fun and succeed in playing the game they love.
